Okay, your house has mold Ravenswood. Now what? Well, it’s time to find a reputable mold remediation service company who can handle the cleanup. There are many companies out there that it can be tricky to choose the very best one. Here are some tips on what you can do in order to find the right one for you.

Ask For Recommendations and Check References

Checking references on several local mold remediation companies in Ravenswood and asking for recommendations in general is a great start. You want the company that you pick to be highly recommended and well trained for such intricate work. They need to be able to prove that they’re experts in the field. You can start by asking your friends, family, and neighbors to see which companies they’ve worked with in the past. They’ll be able to steer you in the right direction. Once you have the names of a few companies, it’s time to do some research on them. Look up online reviews, but keep in mind that some of those negative reviews might have been written by people hired by their competitors in order to affect their business. Use your best judgment when reading them.

Check with Your Home Insurance Agent

In some cases, mold removal Ravenswood is covered by your home insurance policy. This means that after paying your deductible, the insurance company will pay for your mold remediation service. However, you’ll have to hire one of the companies that they work with. In most cases SERVPRO of Ravenswood has a national partnership with national insurance providers. Your insurance provider should give you a list of trusted contractors, such as SERVPRO of Ravenswood, in your area and allow you to pick one. You can rest assured that they won’t allow you to hire a mold remediation company that doesn’t know what they’re doing. They’ll only recommend the best.

Ask About Their Certifications and Training Methods

Removing mold Ravenswood is a very specialized service. This means that these vendors should not hire and place untrained employees to do the job. Those employees must go through specialized training and, depending on the state that you’re in, have official certifications that prove their expertise in mold remediation. Before you hire a company to remove the mold in your home, make sure to ask about this certification. The best companies will allow you to see the certificates that their employees have earned.

The Company Should Be Licensed and Bonded

Although not every state requires for Ravenswood mold remediation companies to be licensed, they should at least be bonded. This means that they have insurance liability to protect against unplanned damage during the mold removal process. Be sure to ask companies when performing reference checks that they have such licensure and bonding. If they don’t, then move on.

Mold

Clockwise from top left: ceiling trusses, drywall and trusses from a tub drain, drywall from drain pipe cover, shower ceiling from tub drain above.

Molds are part of the natural environment, and can be found everywhere, indoors and outdoors. Mold is not usually a problem, unless it begins growing indoors. The best way to control mold growth is to control moisture. The EPA website provides guidance about mold and moisture for homes, schools, multifamily and commercial buildings. Molds can have a big impact on indoor air quality.

Ten Things You Should Know about Mold

  1. Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints.
  2. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
  3. If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
  4. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
  5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
    • Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
    • Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
    • Increasing ventilation
    • Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning
  6. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
  7. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
  8. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
  9. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
  10. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Mold Cleanup

If you already have a mold problem - ACT QUICKLY. Mold damages what it grows on. The longer it grows, the more damage it can cause.  Who should do the cleanup depends on a number of factors. One consideration is the size of the mold problem. If the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet (less than roughly a 3 ft. by 3 ft. patch), in most cases, you can handle the job yourself.  However:

  • If there has been a lot of water damage, and/or mold growth covers more than 10 square feet, consult EPA guide Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings. Although focused on schools and commercial buildings, this document is applicable to other building types.

  • If you choose to hire a contractor (or other professional service provider) to do the cleanup, make sure the contractor has experience cleaning up mold. Check references and ask the contractor to follow the recommendations in EPA guide Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings, the guidelines of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygenists (ACGIH), or other guidelines from professional or government organizations.

  • If you suspect that the heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) system may be contaminated with mold (it is part of an identified moisture problem, for instance, or there is mold near the intake to the system), consult EPA guide Should You Have the Air Ducts in Your Home Cleaned? before taking further action. Do not run the HVAC system if you know or suspect that it is contaminated with mold - it could spread mold throughout the building.

  • If the water and/or mold damage was caused by sewage or other contaminated water, then call in a professional who has experience cleaning and fixing buildings damaged by contaminated water.

  •  If you have health concerns, consult a health professional before starting cleanup.

Floods and Flooding

During a flood cleanup, the indoor air quality in your home or office may appear to be the least of your problems. However, failure to remove contaminated materials and to reduce moisture and humidity can present serious long-term health risks. Standing water and wet materials are a breeding ground for microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria, and mold. They can cause disease, trigger allergic reactions, and continue to damage materials long after the flood.
